In Loving Memory of Brianna Ghey - Forever 16

My daughter, Brianna Ghey, was murdered on the 11th of February 2023. She was lured to a park by two fifteen-year-olds and stabbed 28 times. The children who killed her had been consuming violent and extreme content online. One of them was watching torture videos and so-called “red room” material on the dark web. Part of their motive was to act out the disturbing things they had seen online.

In the months before her death, Brianna was struggling deeply with her mental health. She was self-harming, battling anorexia, and becoming increasingly isolated from those who loved her. I worried about how much time she was spending on her phone and who she was speaking to online, but it wasn’t until after she died that I discovered she had been accessing harmful content that encouraged self-harm and disordered eating. I still don’t know the full extent of what she saw.

Her phone had become an addiction. She was constantly scrolling, often late into the night, and trying to take it away led to constant conflict. I could see it was hurting her, but I didn’t know how to help, and neither did the professionals we turned to.

It is my mission to prevent young people and families from suffering the way we did. I carry Brianna in my heart every single day, she is the driving force behind everything I do.

Our Youth Advisory Board

At the Brianna Ghey Legacy Project, we believe young people’s voices should be at the heart of everything we do. The challenges, pressures, and opportunities they face are constantly changing, and no one understands them better than young people themselves. Our Youth Advisory Board brings together a diverse group who share their lived experiences, ideas, and perspectives, helping us see the world through their eyes. From education and friendships to online safety and mental health, their insights guide us in creating projects, campaigns, and resources that are truly relevant and impactful.

This isn’t just about giving young people a seat at the table, it’s about building solutions with them, not for them. By creating a safe space where they can speak openly and be heard, we ensure their voices shape real change. The Youth Advisory Board plays a vital role in honouring Brianna’s legacy, helping us challenge stigma, improve wellbeing, and work towards a future where all young people feel supported, valued, and safe.

Grace

I'm a student currently studying primary teaching at uni. Because I work with children, I have a passion for keeping them safe and I think it is so important that children are safe online. I also think it is important to improve children's mental health because it will teach them to be more resilient in the future. I love playing the piano and I teach it as a part time job.

Cerys

Hi, my name is Cerys and i’m currently doing a degree apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. I love motorsport and am hoping to work in that field in the future. I also love watching movies and reading books in my spare time. I think when i was younger i could’ve benefited from more education around the internet and social media, knowing how to stay safe and use it in a healthy way. I hope that conversations around the impact of social media continues and everyone keeps learning.

Lucy

Hi, my name is Lucy and I’m currently studying English Literature at the University of Glasgow. I love playing football and netball and love to read in my spare time. With the rise of technology and social media I feel the need to be educated about both its dangers and benefits. Making sure the online world is safe and secure for not only ourselves but for the future generation is a strong desire of mine, one that I believe can be achieved through conversations and education.

Esther Ghey

Founder & Director

Esther is a mental health advocate, author and public speaker. She is also trained to teach .B, a Mindfulness in Schools Project programme for 11-18 year olds. After the heart breaking loss of her daughter Brianna, Esther has become a driving force for positive change, campaigning for safer digital spaces, improved mental health education, and greater support for families. Her work is rooted in compassion and hope, with a mission to help young people and families flourish in a world that often feels overwhelming.

Alisha Ghey

Administration Assistant & Flourishing Families Teacher

Alisha plays a key role in delivering workshops that support mental health and wellbeing, with a focus on mindfulness, connection, and self-care. The sister of Brianna Ghey, Alisha is passionate about creating positive change in her memory. As a young person herself, she brings valuable insight into the real challenges her generation is facing, helping to shape meaningful support for those who need it most.

Becca Percival

Business Development Manager & Flourishing Families Teacher

Becca is the owner of Rebecca Percival Coaching which was established in 2020. Her many roles include self-development and mindfulness coach, first aid for mental health instructor and wellbeing consultant. Becca is also trained to teach Paws B, a Mindfulness in Schools Project programme for 7-12 year olds. Becca is so passionate about encouraging others to be more self aware, to be completely themselves and to have fun!!

Hannah Oertel

External Relations & Programme Innovation Manager

Hannah is a leading authority on the impact of technology on children with a deep understand of how smartphones and social media affect childhood. Hannah is a mother dedicated to building healthier digital habits. With over a decade of experience in solution focused therapy and intervention coaching she regularly features on mainstream media.
