What is the Phones Down Challenge?

The Phones Down Challenge encourages children and families to switch off their smartphones for seven days during the first week of the summer holidays and spend more time enjoying life offline.

Does my child have to give up all technology?

Accepted Answer

No. This challenge is about taking a break from smartphones. Families can decide what works best for them. Watching a family film or using a computer for a specific purpose is different from spending hours scrolling on a smartphone.

What if my child needs a phone for safety?

Accepted Answer

We understand that some children need a way to contact parents. Every family is different. You could consider using a basic mobile phone for calls and texts during the challenge or agree times when a smartphone is only used if needed.

Can parents join in too?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage it. Children are much more likely to succeed when adults lead by example. Putting your own phone away during family time can make a huge difference.

What can we do instead?

There are so many possibilities! Go for a walk, visit a park, play board games, bake together, ride bikes, read, draw, garden, play sports, see friends, volunteer, or simply enjoy talking without distractions.

What if my child doesn't want to take part?

Accepted Answer

That's completely normal. Many children are very attached to their smartphones, so it's important to approach the challenge with patience rather than pressure.
Start by having an open conversation about why you're taking part and make it something the whole family does together. Children are much more likely to join in when they see parents putting their phones down too. Focus on all the fun things you'll do instead, involve them in choosing activities, and celebrate each day you complete together.
Remember, the goal isn't perfection - it's creating more opportunities to connect, have fun and enjoy life beyond the screen.
